After 11 months of waiting, I finally got fiber installed. This was tough I have to say.

Last year in April I started an article with updates on my fiber implementation and the whole project, but I didn't expect it to take this long.

Corona didn't help for sure, but I have to say that the last few months were soooo long. Waiting for the last mile to be completed as well as my house connected was annoying, to say the least.

But, here we are now, 11 months later, gigabit fiber is here and the rest is in the past! Yesterday was a bit of a surprise as I didn't expect to have it all completed and done, but considering I am with an ISP that allows usage of your network gear if you want (hell yeah!), the whole setup was super fast and easy.

The reason I am writing all of this is that some of you might be interested in a question. Can Synology routers deliver a gigabit of WAN speed? Yes, they can.

For the past 2y, I have had a Synology mesh setup up and running with 0 problems when it comes to AC wifi.

Now that I got fiber installed, I wanted to use my router (RT2600AC) as my main router and a place to terminate the connection. Luckily, ISP allows me to use my gear, so connecting fiber from an XGPON (media converter) to my router was nothing special.

VLAN configuration

If you need to configure your Synology router with a custom VLAN or VID you can follow this KB article on how to set it up: https://ln.blackvoid.club/srmvlan.

After setting your VLAN ID all that is left is configure your PPPoE account credentials, and you are done.

Synology RT2600AC and gigabit speeds

So how does the Synology router handle gigabit speeds? In a word, excellent.

I do use a VPN connection towards NordVPN all the time to cover my whole LAN, but some services are not going via the tunnel and use the full bandwidth over HTTPS connections.

So here are the speeds with and without an active tunnel:

Speedtest without an active VPN tunnel
Speedtest with an active VPN tunnel

So, RT2600AC can do more than fine when it comes to gigabit speeds on its WAN port. I didn't have any doubts as I have seen some comments in the past that testified to this, but then again, Internet, a place where everyone thinks they are right, am I right?

This is why I wanted to share solid info that even though the device is 5y+ old, it can more than fine hold its own when it comes to gigabit access.

What does this mean for the Blackvoid site?

Well as some of you know I am an avid fan of self-hosting, and this blog has been self-hosted for 2y now. Hopefully, these fiber speeds will elevate the site to new heights, and provide a better experience for visitors.

Also, the support chat (Rocket chat icon in the upper right corner), is much faster now, so feel free to hop on there if you have any questions on any topic related to Synology, Docker, open-source, or self-hosting.
